It’s a love affair!
Nikon vs. Canon – Natural Light vs. Flash Lighting – Mac vs. PC, they are all different, some have better this while others have better that, but lets face it… If you have the skills your medium doesn’t matter, and we all know PC SUCKS!
I feel the same about coffee shops. Starbucks vs. local favorites. People always tend to rant and rave over the local coffee shops, which, don’t get me wrong, are great, but there is always something to be said about Starbucks’ quality control and consistency. My coffee at Starbucks always tastes the same. I always know what I’m getting. At local coffee shops they grind everything right there and brew as needed… FRESH! The only problem I have with that is the opportunity for error or burnt tasting coffee is more often that not.
The funny thing is, as I compare the large corporation of Starbucks to the local shops, I sit in CC’s Coffee (a local chain) benefiting from free wireless internet. If i were to be at Starbucks I would be paying out of the butt for internet usage. Honestly, I would probably be at Starbucks if it weren’t for the free internet. However, with all this said, my drink of choice during the summer is a sugar free skinny iced mocha… Starbucks doesn’t carry sugar free mocha… damn the bad luck. So, all in all there is good in both and that’s why I patronize both.
If you were wondering my preferences…
- I shoot Nikon. Started with Nikon and have lots of $ invested in Nikon. Will I switch to Canon? I’m liking what I’m getting and don’t have much experience with Canon. They have great reviews, and I am open to shooting Canon if you are open to buying me a body and a few lenses, but until I’m financially able to buy into it I will be shooting Nikon for now… happily, but open to Canon.
- I prefer Flash Lighting. I love natural lighting, but I much prefer the control and detail that I can achieve with flash lighting. And for those wondering… I use Profoto, and plan to use Profoto for a really long time! It is great! I just hope to upgrade and continue to grow to larger systems, but what I have is great in it’s self.
- What kind of computer do I use…??? You are an idiot if you even have to ask.
- Coffee? Just give me a good cup!

My career this year has gone above and beyond my wildest dreams and I couldn’t be happier. I really don’t have any time to work on any of my personal stuff Including my online portfolio, and company site. Most of the work I’ve been seeing on a freelance basis has been strictly referral from previous clients. But like I said I love my job at Summit Marketing and plan to move up to a Creative Director position in few years. My freelance stuff is starting to pay very well with the bigger clients and contacts, so it could be possible for my to do my own thing, but not yet. Anyway to get back to the subject Below are my preferences::
Preference 1 : I LOVE PC’s the processing power, efficiency, and speed I get out of my work and home pc’s are well above what mac would dream of doing. Now don’t get me wrong I like the ocassional MAc here and there my laptop is a 17″ mac book pro,running a developer copy of leopard,(i got from a guy I deal with at Bungie I will not mention the gorilla’s name for his protection) but most of the time it can’t keep up with me.
Here is what my PC looks like as far as specs:

Processor:
(2) quad core Intel Xeons @ 2.8ghz (basically 8 powerful processing cores of beauty)
RAM:
(4) GB of ddr2 memory
Hard Drives:
(4) 250 GB Hatachi 15,000 RPM HDD drives “run at incredible speeds)
Monitors: (2) Samsung 24″ monitors ( 244t) these bad boys tun about 1,500 a piece which is half the price of the 30″ cinema display. To be completely honest I have seen the cinema displays in action at a few marketing agencies and game studios I’ve freelanced in. But the Samsung 244t is the best of all, if you don’t believe me and have the money see for yourself it’s incredible.
when it comes to anything being slow on my PC it’s because the software simply can’t keep up. I am only limited to software power.

So yeah I’m a pc guy, but like I said I also love my MAC it just tends to not handle what I throw at it. I know beat, stone, and kick me in the ground, but hey it’s my opinion. Anyway I prefer Mello joy coffee from LA, but it’s kind of hard to get my hands on it. I have to order my coffee online since I travel so much now. I don’t handle photo to much any more, but I really like both, but I’ve leaned towards cannon when I actually do shot. But I don’t shot the photos anymore I just come up with the concepts and ideas for them. So there you have it a little explanation about me and my career not only to tell you a little about me, but to show why I need all that computing power . . .

I have to say that I have to DISAGREE with everything you have said. I use to praise the beauty of PC over MAC to the point of cultic religion status, but Alleluia I have seen the light!!
Mac is a better platform, more stable, more secure, less open to viruses, and handles the graphic world much better. There are a few things that I have to say to qualify those statements that I have just made. As with any computer you can run into problems if you are not running the correct version software and the correct hardware.
1. I suggest picking up a copy of Adobe CS3 if you are a graphic designer. The new intel macs are speed demons, but Adobe waited to release a compatible version until about a month ago. Adobe CS2 was horribly slow on the intels. It actually ran faster in Windows on Boot Camp than in Native OS X. But that problem has been solved and runs MUCH faster than what I have seen running on a PC.
2. If you are comparing a Macbook Pro to a Dell Dual Xeon, you are comparing Apples to Oranges. Now compare a Mac Pro dual intel quad core Xeon to a Dell dual intel quad core Xeon. Price is different. To get the same specs you are going to pay more. You said retail $15,000. We got a Mac Pro with very similar specs for only $5,000 plus 30″ Cinema display. I honestly can’t compare the Dell Precision 490 and the Mac Pro for speed because I haven’t worked on it in the comparable software apps. But I don’t doubt the speed of the Mac Pro over the Dell running Vista.
3. Cinema displays. I was a nah-sayer of the Cinema display mainly because of the price, but I have to agree that it is beautiful. If you are a serious designer you will be calibrating your screens every 1-2 weeks and i find that compared to other monitors the Cinema display is more ON than any of the other’s that I have worked with. It of course isn’t the brightest screen, which consequently isn’t always good for design. Plus the beauty factor is just incomparable!
4, 5, & 6: EXPOSÉ! The ability to quickly switch between windows and get a spread of everything. Of course Vista has ripped this to an extent. I still find Exposé to move faster and smoother than its Vista step-child. As a web developer I have umpteen windows open at the same time…including Windows in Parallels and I can switch back and forth in a flash.
7: ugh…Windows! As much as I hate to say it the ability to run Windows on the Mac is a huge improvement over just running Windows alone. I can check a design in all platforms (including Linux) on one machine without restart and not in virtual environment. Most web developers in windows alone just forget about Firefox and Safari on the Mac. Safari makes up 2% of the browsing community and now that it is available for Windows I imagine much more.
8, 9, 10: It is mac…come on, Steve and the Team have put so much effort into user experience that it makes life easier. It is just easier to do what we do! I constantly ask myself…WWJD. What Would Jobs Do.

Daniel, you’ve made very valid points, but I don’t completely hate MACS i just lean towards my PC from time to time. I also have had CS3 since release for the PC and I am using the MAC version at work. I love it and notice NO performance difference . . . Did you know that there was a point when CS3 was going to be a PC ONLY release . . . just so you know… anyway like I said everyone has their own opinions. Me and Shawn Arthur (Creative Director) AKA “MY BOSS”, get into some debates here and there over this discussion, but ultimately decide it’s not worth the name calling and bashing of systems they both have the ups and downs and in the end both get the job done . . . Yes http://www.summitmarketing.com is full of DIE HARD Mac lovers and it doesn’t fit to well when they have a PC/MAC guy amongst them, as on of the Art Directors, They see the battle as your either one or the other, but you can have both and often it is better to have both. . . anyway it’s a long debate similar to the XBOX 360 vs PS3 . . . they both will never end . ..
